Policing Your Township: Tackling Current Police Management Issues - 4/23/23 - Dauphin County
This half-day class will cover a number of hot-button issues involving management of municipal police departments, making it a must-attend for township supervisors, police command staff, managers, and others with police-related responsibility. You will hear from and interact with representatives from the Pennsylvania State Police, municipal police departments, management-side labor counsel, and others. Topics will include:
· Regional Police Roundtable – This session will focus on the challenges and benefits of forming and sustaining regional municipal police departments, as well as what worked for successful regional departments, both during the formation process and beyond.
· Hiring and Retaining Municipal Police Officers – This session will highlight successful (and unsuccessful) efforts undertaken by departments to hire and retain quality police officers. It will also cover the legal dos and don’ts associated with the hiring process.
· Police Liability and Stress-Related Issues – This panel will discuss the significant increases many law enforcement agencies are facing in officer stress and other mental health-related issues, including on and off-duty alcohol and drug use, suicide, and significant discipline issues. This is intended to help those who have not yet dealt with it in their departments understand what to look for, how to get help for their personnel before bad things happen, and how to deal with issues when they happen.
